The United Arab Emirates has the world's seventh largest oil reserves and possesses one of the most developed economies in West Asia. It is currently the thirty-sixth largest economy at market exchange rates, and has a high per capita gross domestic product, with a nominal per capita GDP of $46,584 as per the IMF.
The UAE has an open economy with a high per capita income and a sizable annual trade surplus. In 2009, its GDP, as measured by purchasing power parity, stood at US$200.4 billion. The GDP per capita is currently the 14th in the world and 3rd in the Middle East, after Qatar and Kuwait as measured by the CIA World Factbook, or the 17th in the world as measured by the International Monetary Fund.
Petroleum and natural gas exports play an important role in the economy, especially in Abu Dhabi. A massive construction boom, an expanding manufacturing base, and a thriving services sector are helping the UAE diversify its economy.
Oil reserves in the United Arab Emirates, according to its government, are about 98 billion barrels (15.6×10^9 m3), almost as big as Kuwait's claimed reserves. Of the emirates, Abu Dhabi has most of the oil with 92 billion barrels (14.6×10^9 m3) while Dubai has 4 billion barrels (640×10^6 m3) and Sharjah has 1.5 billion barrels (240×10^6 m3).
Most of the oil is in the Zakum field which is the third largest in the Middle East with an estimated 66 billion barrels (10.5×10^9 m3). The UAE produces about 2.9 million barrels per day (460×10^3 m3/d) of total oil liquids, but has stated its intention to increase this to 5 million barrels per day (790×10^3 m3/d) by 2014. The UAE's reserves-to-production is about 93 years.
About two-thirds of world oil reserves located in the Gulf, the UAE oil reserves estimated at 100 billion barrels, or roughly 1/10 the world's reserves, which at the present level of extraction provide extraction of 100 years. The industry experts estimate the world's gas reserves at 150 trillion cubic meters. 4% of these values (6 trln.kub.m) are in the UAE: 92% - in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, 5% - in Sharjah and 2% - in Dubai. Currently, about 55% of extracted gas is used in the country, and the rest - are exported in liquefied form. Today United Arab Emirates ranks second in the Arab world after neighbouring Saudi Arabia's GDP. The country provides 10% of the GDP of all Arab countries combined.
